A day out at Hemsworth Water Park, West Yorkshire

When you’re driving through a built up industrial estate on the outskirts of Pontefract and Wakefield, you don’t imagine you’re going to be sat on a sandy beach five minutes later and watching kids paddling.

Which is what we found ourselves doing today when we decided to make the most of the glorious Bank Holiday weather we’ve been blessed with this weekend.

For the bargain price of £2 a car into the Hemsworth Water Park complex, we parked up and went off to explore.

Then there were lots of other things you could do inside for a minimal extra charge.

We found a huge boating lake, where you could hire a pedal boat if you wished, or if you’re like us, just have a play on the sandy beach next to it.

They even sell buckets and spades at the little kiosk next to the play park!

It was lovely just sitting on the sand and watching the boats pedal or sail by, and the quacking ducks.

After the peaceful serenity of the beach, the small people spied an adventure playground (£2.50 per child entrance – definitely worth it though!) and we came across this MOTHER of a slide, which got expressions like this…. :-O

and on going down, was declared AWESOME!!

and tyres to swing on….

then we spotted a little train chugging and wending its way through the park. As under 8’s had to be accompanied by an adult, I went along for the ride, as the 5 year old fell into that category.

On our trip round (two laps of the park) we had fun spotting furry creatures, animals and bears hiding in the woods.

We spied…

(cuddly toy!) lions hiding in the trees

and some little frogs on the grass.

If after all that you’ve worked up an appetite, there’s a lovely looking (and smelling!) riverside cafe for some sustenance, or do what a lot of people were doing and take a big picnic blanket to lie on, and a picnic basket and just enjoy your al fresco dining on the grass!

As we’d already eaten before we went, we just had a stop at one of the ice cream vans parked up for a 99 ice cream with chocolate flake and strawberry sauce.

Next time we go, I’ll be dusting off the picnic basket though…..

What a great place to spend the day! As you say perfect for a picnic in between exploring the park and having fun in the water. Thanks for sharing with Country Kids.
