Having fun climbing trees
If you delve back into the dark recesses of your mind and access your childhood memories (like I occasionally do) do you remember the sheer, simplistic fun of climbing trees?
I do.
One early memory is of primary school and the huge old oak trees where we used to play the “Roots Game.”
Basically, the rules of the game was to only stand on the roots of the trees and jump from one tree to another by standing on the gnarled, twisted roots.
If you fell off, you were out.
The National Trust seems to agree with me that trees are fun and has recently published a list of “50 Things You should Do Before You’re 11 and 3 quarters.”
Tree climbing being one of them.
So today in the park my two were found shimmying up some branches and sitting in the trees.
There used to be a tyre hanging in the trees which we used as a swing when growing up.
It’s a housing estate now. 😦

I was rubbish at climbing trees, Baba hasn’t really done a lot of tree climbing at only 4 he isn’t quite big enough but he has tried a little and I can’t wait to see him attempting it xx

Simple fun is the best! Even with support my wee man can manage a bit of tree climbing. He certainly enjoys jumping over the roots and exploring tree stumps. We pretend the tree roots are snakes 🙂
My sister, 2 brothers and myself loved climbing trees. We used to have a plantation of conifers near us and we used to climb and sit in them and use them as spaceships!
Both my boys are grown up now but I’ve registered our 2 and half year old grandson for the 50 things. Looking forward to some fun times. 🙂
Yes! I do remember loving to climb trees and NOT being afraid (heights terrify me now, go figure). As soon as my kids are tall enough to read the lowest branches, i will encourage them to climb, too, although, they probably won’t need a whole lot of encouragement 🙂
My youngest daughter Kitty who is 5 loves climbing trees. Only low branched ones but she’s fearless!

Yep, I remember playing roots. I also remember climbing trees with friends when I was 18 and a small child being told ‘don’t climb that one there’s a lady up there’!
Ah climbing trees is such a great basic childhood activity. Kids love it!
